Cotton & Steel Prize All Stitched Up

Back in July, my local patchwork shop Kim Bradley Creations held a morning where we could go & meet the fabric distributors of the new fabric range Cotton and Steel. They had samples of all the fabric there from each of the ranges to check out and the option of pre-ordering from Kim. This is a new, modern range from 5 young designers, there had been lots of buzz out of the US about the range following Spring Quilt Market earlier in 2014.

It was a great morning & whilst it is not my usual fabric colour or pattern palette, I did pre-order a couple of fat quarter packs to stretch myself out of my comfort zone.

When I went to pick up the fabric, I discovered I had won the lucky prize - a set of mini charm squares (2 1/2" squares) in the basics range with a cute purse pattern from Green Bee patterns.

Scroll forward to last week when I finally sat down to stitch up the purse.
Have to say, it was different working from only pictures, with no written instructions to follow.

Firstly I planned the layout of squares to my liking.......

Chain stitched each side of 15 squares together.......

Joined the 3 chains of 5 squares without cutting the chain stitching (quick, easy method which keeps the squares together for ease of construction).........

After ironing each joined piece, I quilted each side onto small wadding scraps........

Added the zipper...............

I varied from the pattern in that when I added the lining, I stitched up around the quilted sided, then the lining side (leaving a gap to turn purse through) so that inside my purse is fully finished with no raw edges showing. (Hint - leave the zipper open in this step so purse can be turned through)....

A quick, easy & colourful project with the option of being a make up purse or small clutch to hold bits and pieces when going out.......
