Trauma Teddies

Over the past few years I have had lots (& lots & lots) of time to sit and knit.
After breaking my ankle, a friend gave me a pattern to knit trauma teddies.

There are lots of patterns available on line & through different organisations for these teddies. The pattern I was given made up into different sizes depending on the ply of wool used. I like these as you knit the teddy in one piece before sewing up & I like the small size made from 4 ply yarn.

Once I've knitted a few, I have a sewing session to stitch them up, stuff and add their features. I always stitch the ribbon on as well so little fingers can't undo & swallow.
I have two on the go at a time - one here at home, & one in the car. I made a cute bag just the right size to fit the needles, yarn, scissors & pattern that goes everywhere with me. Sitting waiting to see drs, the dentist, being treated at the physio, waiting for appointments has become much more productive & initiated some wonderful conversations about what I am making & what I do with the teddies.
My teddies become members of the team at my local police station, where they are available to go out to accidents, family disputes or have on hand in the station as needed. Here is the first batch of 70  packed ready to report for duty.

There are other great causes you can knit for as well if teddies aren't your thing.

One is Wrap With Love, you can find their details & pattern here.

Retro Mummy has a great post on knitting beanies for cancer kids, read about that here

Knitted teddies, dolls & other toys are also ideal to add to the Operation Christmas Child Shoe Boxes through Samaritans Purse

Would love to hear if you have a great cause you knit for (or crochet - something this leftie can't seem to master).
